Disposition
The Toller is a dog of average size, powerful, compact, proportionate and well-muscled; the bones are from medium to heavy. The Toller has a great agility, focus and determination. During the work the dog has a rapid and precipitous action with the head raised to at least the height of the trunk and with the tail severely frayed in constant motion.
General appearance
The Toller is highly intelligent, easy to train and has great endurance. Strong and powerful swimmer, it is Retriever natural and tenacious on land and water, ready to immediately put in motion as soon as you sign over. Its great desire to carry and its joviality are essential qualities for its type of activity.
Head and skull
The Toller has a head well designed and slightly cuneiform. The skull is broad and only just rounded with the occiput not prominent and the cheeks flat. Good measure for a normal male should be 14 cm (5 ins.) between the ears to shrink to 3.8 cm (1 ins.) on the top of the nose. The length of the head, from the nose to the occiput, is approximately 23 cm (9 ins.), but the head must be proportionate to the size. The stop is moderate.
Eyes
The eyes are well apart, almond shaped, of medium size. The color is from amber to brown. The expression is friendly, attentive and intelligent. The edges of the eyelid must be the same color of the lips.
Ears
The ears are triangular, of medium size, set high and the back of the skull with the base slightly built, well equipped with hair behind the crease, but with short hair on the rounded rounded.
Muzzle
The muzzle thins regularly starting from the stop towards the nose with the lower jaw strong but not prominent. The bottom line of the muzzle is straight from the corner of the lip at the corner of the jawbone, while the depth of the muzzle is higher at the stop than that of the nose. The hair on the muzzle is short and fine.
Nose
The nose thins towards the end with large nostrils. The color can be similar to the coat or black.
Mouth
The lips must be well tight and to form, in profile, a slight curve without being heavy. The correct closure is like scissor close and is required a complete dentition. The jaws must be strong enough to bring enough game and is essential a soft mouth.
Neck
The neck is very muscular and well set, of medium length without the presence of dewlap.
Front
The shoulders are muscular with the blade turned backwards and well-folded to form a well-sloped withers towards the back. The scapula and humerus are approximately the same length. The elbows must be close to the body, neither turning nor returned, and they must move fluently and regularly. The front legs must look like two parallel columns, straight and well boned. The pasterns are strong and just tilted. The feet are heavily webbed and of medium size, compact and round with well arched toes and thick pads. The spurs can be removed.
Trunk
The chest is well let down with good development of cost. The sternum reaches the elbow. The back is short and straight, the top line is straight, the kidneys are strong and muscular. The ribs are well developed, not barrel shaped or flat. The bottom line is moderately whippety.
Rear
The rear is muscular, broad and square in appearance. The rear and front angulation must be proportionate. The thighs are very muscular with the top approximately equal length of the lower. The knee is well angulated and hocks are low and parallel. The spurs are not allowed.
Tail
The tail must follow the natural trend, slightly tilted, of the croup. The tail is wide at the base, provided plenty of hair, must arrive with the last vertebra, at least to the hock. The tail can be brought under the topline except when the dog is at attention, in which curve over the back but did not touch the trunk.
Gait and movement
The Toller has an impression of power with light and cheerful gait, showing good amplitude before and after a considerable boost. The feet must not be turned inside or outside and the legs must move straight. With the increasing of speed, the dog marches on a single track while maintaining a straight back line.
Hair and color
The Toller was created to bring back from the icy waters and must have a waterproof double coat of medium length and texture with a softer, dense undercoat. The hair may be slightly wavy in the back, the rest is smooth. During the winter can form a long curl on his throat. The fringes are soft on the throat, behind the ears and back of the thighs, while the forelegs are moderately fringed. The color has all the variations of red and orange with shades lighter under the tail, and usually there is white on the tip of the tail, the legs (no more than metacarpals and metatarsals), chest and face. A dog of high quality must not be penalized for lack of white. The pigmentation of the nose, of the lips and of the eyelids may be pink, of the color of the coat or black.
Size
The ideal size, more than 18 months, is for males of 48-51 cm (19-20 ins.) and for females of 45-48 cm (18-19 ins.). Are granted 3 cm above or below the ideal size.
